Hurricane Harvey makes landfall in Texas and could bring catastrophic flooding and winds up to 130 miles per hour
Harvey, which intensified to a Category 4 storm earlier Friday and brought warnings of a full-blown natural disaster, also could churn a devastating storm surge that raises the sea as much as 13 feet above normally dry land.
The National Hurricane Center said it expects “catastrophic and life-threatening” flash flooding along the middle and upper Texas coast. The storm is expected to stall, dumping 15 to 30 inches of rain — with isolated amounts of up to 40 inches — over several days.
Harvey was on track to be the strongest hurricane to hit the United States since Wilma in 2005. President Trump has signed a disaster declaration to provide immediate federal aid.
