The research included 93 cognitively healthy females ranging in age from 20 to 67, with 43% of participants being postmenopausal. Each participant had below-average cardiorespiratory fitness and did not exercise regularly before the study.

Participants were randomly assigned to either a six-month aerobic exercise program or a stretching-and-toning program. The greatest cognitive benefits were observed in individuals who engaged in 45 minutes of aerobic activity four times per week. These participants saw measurable improvements in executive function, with gains first appearing at the three-month mark and strengthening throughout the remainder of the program.

While the findings are encouraging, experts caution that this was a secondary analysis of a relatively small study. Dr. Trinh emphasized that the results should be viewed as important evidence that deserves confirmation rather than definitive proof.

The study also highlights a significant gap in medical research: menopause status is often overlooked in exercise and brain-health trials, despite the fact that women bear a higher lifetime burden of dementia. Future studies with larger sample sizes, better characterization of perimenopause and postmenopause stages, and Alzheimer’s biomarkers such as amyloid and tau would help determine whether these cognitive improvements translate into lower long-term dementia risk.
