Humanoid Robots in 2026: What Is Actually Deployed

The humanoid robotics industry has entered a strange moment in mid-2026. Billions of dollars are flowing into startups, market projections reach into the hundreds of billions, and headlines confidently declare that tens of thousands of robots are already working on factory floors. The reality on the ground is far more modest — and far more interesting. A careful look at company filings, earnings calls, and verified deployment reports reveals a sector where a handful of robots are doing genuinely useful work, one Chinese manufacturer ships hardware that nobody in the West can match on price, and the most talked-about program on the planet has not yet sold a single unit.

The Hype Versus the Hard Numbers

Search for humanoid robot deployment figures and you will find confident assertions: Tesla has passed 50,000 cumulative Optimus units, Figure AI has surpassed 10,000 warehouse deployments, and more than a thousand robots are already working Tesla’s production lines. The problem is that none of these figures come from the companies they describe. Tesla has never published an Optimus production count, audited or otherwise. What the company has said on the record, under the legal weight of earnings calls, is considerably more modest.

On Tesla’s Q4 2025 earnings call in January 2026, Elon Musk explicitly conceded that Optimus was “not in usage in our factories in a material way” and that units were “primarily for learning, not productive tasks.” That admission sits in stark contrast with the popular narrative of a fully matured, mass-produced fleet. The gap matters because humanoid robotics has graduated from research curiosity to capital allocation question. Humanoid-specific startup funding reached roughly $4.3 billion in 2025, part of more than $8.5 billion flowing into robotics startups overall — the strongest year since 2021. Goldman Sachs projects the humanoid market at $38 billion by 2035, while Morgan Stanley puts it at $152 billion by 2040. Numbers that large attract content optimized for search engines rather than accuracy.

What Tesla Has Actually Said

Separating physical presence from productive work resolves much of the confusion. Robots are on factory floors. They are generating training data. They are not measurably replacing labor. The track record behind the Optimus program is sobering:

  • Tesla targeted 5,000 Optimus units for internal factory use in 2025. Actual output, per reporting by The Information, was a few hundred — under ten percent of the goal.
  • Contributing factors included China’s April 2025 export restrictions on rare earth magnets and longer-than-planned Gen 3 design finalization, particularly on the dexterous hand system.
  • On the Q1 2026 earnings call, Musk confirmed Optimus production would begin at Fremont in late July or August, four months after the last Model S and Model X units rolled off that line in early May.
  • As of mid-July 2026, production had not begun. Tesla’s Q2 delivery report, published on 2 July, contained no Optimus numbers at all.
  • Analysts have counted eight separate Optimus production milestones that were delayed or revised before their original due date.

Musk indicated at Davos in January 2026 that public sales were likely by the end of 2027. Serial production of a humanoid robot with 10,000 components has no precedent in manufacturing history, and Tesla’s own Model 3 ramp in 2017 and 2018 took more than eighteen months to reach stable volume with a far simpler product. Missing an aggressive target is not evidence of a failing program — but the honest summary is that the most-discussed humanoid robot on Earth has not yet started its production line.

Who Actually Has Robots Working

The strongest deployment evidence belongs to companies with less market attention. Figure AI completed an eleven-month pilot at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg with its Figure 02 robot. According to the company’s November 2025 report, the robot logged more than 1,250 operating hours, loaded over 90,000 sheet-metal parts, and took roughly 1.2 million steps while supporting production of more than 30,000 BMW X3 vehicles. It worked ten-hour shifts, Monday through Friday, placing metal parts into welding fixtures to five-millimeter precision, holding above 99 percent placement accuracy per shift and meeting an 84-second cycle time. This is not full-scale production. It is something more useful for assessing the field: genuine integration with an active automotive assembly line rather than a controlled demonstration. Figure has since retired the 02 units and moved Figure 03 into a logistics sequencing task at the same plant.

Agility Robotics has the broader commercial footprint. The company says its Digit robot has accumulated more than 65,000 operating hours across nine customer facilities, naming GXO, Schaeffler, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, and Mercado Libre as commercial customers. Its RoboFab plant in Salem, Oregon was designed for up to 10,000 Digit units annually at full capacity. Neither Figure nor Agility is deploying at the scale implied by the sector’s valuations — Figure held a $39 billion private valuation as of September 2025, higher than Goldman’s projection for the entire humanoid market nine years out.

The Chinese Volume Story

Western coverage tends to underplay the part of the market that actually ships hardware. Unitree Robotics, based in Hangzhou, shipped approximately 5,500 humanoid units across its product line in 2025 — more than Figure has shipped in its entire history — and targets 10,000 to 20,000 units in 2026. Its G1 humanoid starts around $16,000, roughly an order of magnitude below full-size Western platforms. The company reached unicorn status in June 2025 at a $1.3 billion valuation on a round led by ByteDance, Alibaba, and Tencent, and has since won approval for a STAR Market listing.

Volume is not the same as profit. Unitree’s Q1 2026 net profit fell 52 percent year-on-year even as humanoid robot stocks surged on 10 July on the back of Optimus procurement orders and the company’s IPO approval. The strategy split is clear: Figure, Agility, and Apptronik are building purpose-built industrial robots for narrow tasks, while Unitree pursues cost and volume. Meanwhile, China’s humanoid robotics innovation center continues to position the country as a pace-setter in embodied intelligence, with chief scientist Jiang Lei noting that the nation has established itself as a leader in both the underlying intelligence and the physical hardware.

Humanoids Enter the Classroom and the Battlefield

Deployment is also expanding beyond the factory floor. A rural New York school district will be one of the first in the United States to bring a humanoid robot into the classroom this year, with a robot named “Sally” set to assist in special education settings. School officials have emphasized that Sally will support — not replace — teachers, a careful framing that reflects the sensitivity surrounding automation in education. The pilot will be closely watched by other districts considering similar programs.

The military frontier is moving faster than many expected. At the recent WAIC 2026 conference, AGIBOT unveiled four new products showcasing embodied AI in real-world operations, signaling that Chinese manufacturers are pushing beyond pure research into deployable systems. Separately, a robotics CEO told Euronews that humanoid robots could be deployed in combat as early as 2027, a timeline that raises serious questions about autonomy, ethics, and oversight in armed conflict. The conversation around battlefield robotics has shifted from speculative to logistical — the question is no longer whether robots will be used in war, but how quickly and under what rules.

The Honest Scorecard

A clear-eyed look at the field produces a narrower picture than the coverage suggests:

  • Tesla Optimus: Internal factory presence but no published industrial KPIs. Units not disclosed; low hundreds reported mid-2025. No external commercial sales, with public availability targeted late 2026 at the earliest.

Reading the Field Honestly

The honest summary of humanoid robotics in July 2026 is narrower than the hype suggests. A handful of robots are doing real, documented, repetitive work at a small number of named sites. One Chinese manufacturer ships in the thousands at a price point nobody in the West matches. The largest and most-discussed program has not sold a single unit and has not started its production line. That is not failure — it is the normal shape of an industry learning to manufacture something genuinely new.

The next hard checkpoint arrives on 22 July 2026, when Tesla reports Q2 results. It will not settle the question of whether humanoid robots are ready for mass deployment, but it will be the first opportunity since April to hear whether the Fremont ramp is following a different curve from the last one. Investors, manufacturers, and policymakers would do well to listen carefully — and to treat any number that has not appeared in a filing as a claim rather than a fact.
